Listener Stories

Emily

Hi Mark, this is not about a dog, but a handicapped squirrel my sister rescued and kept as a pet for 12 years. She so loved “Emily” that she wrote a book about her, which I helped her write and provided photos and artwork for. We would love to send you a copy of “An Acorn for Emily” published through AuthorHouse if you tell us where to send it. I think you will enjoy this very heart warming story. As for myself, my husband and i have rescued more than 40 stray and injured cats over the past 30 years. We also had 2 very special dogs in our lives too, they are gone now. Photos of some of our cats are posted on my website. Each one has his or her own tale, and maybe someday I will write about them. Thanks so very much for your time… we love your radio show and books, God Bless you!

Harley

I just read Rescuing Sprite. My Dad, a huge fan of yours (as am I) bought this book for me when my Harley (13 years old) passed away. Harley was a black lab and was the sweetest dog I have ever met. He actually smiled and like you I miss everything about him. I have never cried so much while reading a book. I guess you call that therapy. I just saw so many similarities as we also have another black lab, Gunner, who joined our family as a puppy when Harley was 6. Gunner too noticed the absence, but we are showering him with affection. We had many blessings this past year, but 2 stand out. My husband had back surgery and had to be off of work for 6 months so he was home and with Harley and Gunner that entire time. Due to the economy, I was laid off of my job of 16 years (a blessing and not so much) and was able to be with both of my buddies full time. I was able tto spend Harley’s last days with him and able to be here for Gunner when he lost Harley. Lastly, we were blessed that Harley passed away on his own and I thank the Lord for that as I feel for you for having to make that decision. It was a wonderful story and I hope that Pepsi and Griffen are thriving.

Remembering My Fancy

I was lucky enough to have Two special Dogs. I sent you Sandy\’s, this is
Fancy\’s.

\’\”Remembering My Fancy\”, 1991-2001

Walking into a Pet Store, In the year of \’92,
Just looking for a dog to buy,
But instead, I found You.

Your brothers were hogging the front of the cage,
As you tried to root your way through
I could hear you yelling as you danced back and forth,
\”HEY GUYS, LET ME SEE TOO!!\”

The owner took you all three out and sat you on the floor,
I could tell you were not just a dog,
You were oh so much more.

With one lick on my face, You stole my heart that day,
Little did I know we\’d only have ten years,
Before you\’d go away.

You were there on the days I felt down and out,
When I felt I couldn\’t go on,
You\’d jump in my lap, Toss me a toy, as if to say,
LET\’S PLAY!!!!!\” (more…)

Our Girl Sandy

It was a sad time in my life when she arrived. My dad had passed
away (2000), and I was feeling so lost. Someone threw her away like
garage, she was lost too.
By the grace of God, she found our house. At first sight, I was as much
in love with her as she was me. I fed her for a few weeks, and made a
bed for her under my carport. I thought she would just eat a few meals,
then go on her way, as so many other dogs did. But she was different. I
could tell she didn\’t want to move on,,,,,,  She knew she was finally home.
I took her to the Vet, told him I thought she was grown, she weighed
31 pounds at the time. He looked at her teeth, sorta laughed and said,
\”No, she\’s about 4 months old.\” My daughter named her \”Sandy\”, because
of her sandy-red color. She finally stopped growing, and topped-out at
106. She wasn\’t fat,,,,,,just muscle and strength.
She owned the street. She thought she had to control every car and human
she came in contact with. A 5 foot fence separated her for any contact
with them, but that didn\’t seem to matter to Sandy. She had to let them
know that she was in control of this part of Woody Terrace.
I came home one day after a year or so of \”her owning me\”, LOL, and dis-
covered she had torn the drainpipe off the house. It was put up with concrete
nails, guess noone told Sandy she couldn\’t tear it off. (more…)

Cinnamon

My dearest friend gave me Rescuing Sprite for Christmas. Little did I know I had such a short time with Cinnamon. My Cadog, My Docat. He heard Mark Levin’s voice from a half mile away and was pawing at the window. We chorltled whn Mark Levin said he was the most beutiful voice on radio, but Cinnamnon thought so. For a wonderful wintry 4 years this was our touchstone. Alas, we had to decide when Cinnamon was in heart failure, whether to give us another 4 days with him or let him go. He is buried with all our dear animals on our property. I felt him with me when I was gardening today. He was always with me. And he always will be . Funny how a little cat can have such an influence on your life. I love my dogs but cats rule. I just read Castle Cats last night.

April

Dear Mr. Levin
My wife MaryLou and I deeply appreciate your courage for telling the truth about what is going on in our country.
I am writing because last Friday we had to put our cat, April to sleep. She suffered two strokes, the forst was being treated with medication to no avail. We feared another stroke would be extremely painful, plus April seemed to be living by instinct alone. So, we sadly took her for her last car ride and held her as she went to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for us. I have been attempting to read Rescuing Sprite to find the emotional courage. Unfortunately, it is very hard for me because April was with me for 20 years and a true pet friend. Today a sympathy card arrived from the vet with a card describing the Rainbow Bridge. I broke down and and miss her.
May you be Blessed all the days of your life.
Sincerely,
Jim from NJ
