Listener Stories

Mei-Ling

I lost my cat Mei-Ling this past April. I have had her for 19 years. I got he when she was 6 weeks old. She was my best friend and a loving companion. She loved being with me all the time. I miss her terribly. Thank You for adding this to your web site. I enjoy your show and listen everyday.

Scout

Hi Mark,

My name is Scout, I am an American Bull Dog and I am approximately 1 and a half years old. The first part of my life was pretty hard; you see my former master was a soldier stationed on Hunter Army Airfield, the home of the 75th Rangers and the Special Operations command here in Georgia. There is a lot of activity going on here. My master was deployed to war and his wife or the people that he left me with did not take very good care of me and I got away from them. During the time that I was on my own I lived in the wooded area around the airfield and lived off of what ever I could catch and a great part of the food that I would eat was acorns that are very plentiful in the woods here. For a long time the animal control officers. Police and MP’s would try to catch me and I was even chased around by a helicopter a couple of times when I wandered onto the runway. I love to run and evade capture and that is what I did. No body could ever catch me and I was out on my own for a long long time.

One day a very pretty lady who is a DOD police officer hear heard about all of the people that had tried unsuccessfully to catch me and she said that she would take a shot at it on her lunch time, you see she had heard about me from all of the officers that had tried to capture me and the stories about the times I would get on the runway and the soldiers would have to chase me off because they have a lot of airplanes coming and going. Well she just went out to the area that I had been spotted the most often and sure enough that’s where she found me. You know she did not try to chase me, all she did was hold her hand out and say {Here boy} and because she did not try to chase me, that’s what every other person had done, I came right up to her and she was so nice and loving that I went with her. When I got to my new home her husband was there for once and I did not trust him to well at first but soon learned to trust and love him like my woman mistress. He is gone an awful lot like my first man master but he has taught me to protect his wife from bad people and he even came up with the name of Scout, he says that is because I now how to escape and evade very well. Now I am very happy and safe with these two loving people and I have lots of good food to eat now.

My man and woman masters are away a lot, the man more so but they are helping protect our country and I love them very much and thank God that I have a bed of my own and don’t have to live in the woods and get chased any more. I get real scarred when it thunders because I once had lightning hit real close to me in the woods and I have two black marks on my side that were left when the lightning arced and hit me, but I am getting better because I feel safe here. I had a hard life at first but thanks to these nice people who love me very much and take care of me real good I am so happy and have a great life now.

Booboo

On Oct. 19, 2007 we had to put our cat, Booboo to sleep.
We had her for 20 years. I still expect to see her laying on the rug in the sun in front of the door. This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

Love you Mark…

Nine Doberman Pinschers

I have been blessed to have nine Doberman Pinschers in my life. And although I know that there life span is so short compared to other breeds, their loyalty and love makes me keep coming back to them. When they reach a certain age I become so worried about their health that I watch every move they make to make sure they are all right. Having put down so many never softens the deep depression that comes with each one, since they all have their own special place in your heart.

Moose

This is Moose. He is a Lab/Great Dane cross that I adopted in 2002. I also adopted a Lab/Huskey cross at the same time that I named Squirrel. Hence a Rock & Bullwinkle Show “Moose & Squirrel.” Unfortunately Squirrel was a beaten dog and was mentally retarded. I never was able to train him in area of house breaking or any of the other standard sit, stay commands. Squirrel was very high spirited and slipped out of the dog park gate one day when he was about 2 years old and was hit by a car. Moose, who has had bad hips since the are of 6 months tried to follow his smaller buddy and when the car struck he howled for what seemed like 5 minutes. Moose is very smart and knows around 30 human words and react to them when you speak. I am sure that Moose knew and understood exactly what happened when Squirrel died. While Squirrel was very trying, what with the constant clean-up of his bathroom breaks and other problems such as siezures, he was a good boy in many ways and Moose developed a bond with him and actually, in the last six months of Squirrel’s life, got my attention to let them outside when Squirrel needed a potty break. In the last six months, Squirrel only had one or two boo boos on the rug. As you can see, Moose has taken over the couch and enjoys sitting on his rump. I’m sorry to say that I can not find any pictures of Squirrel and I’m afraid those pictures reside on a hard drive that does not work anymore. Moose and miss Squirel a lot. But luckly we still have each other.

My Riley

Our first anniversary is November 17. That is the day I got Riley from the Arizona Animal Welfare Society a no kill shelter. She had been there for five and a half months, longer than most of the dogs there. I don’t know why she had not been adopted sooner but it was my good fortune that she wasn’t. I have had three fine dogs and loved them all but this little pit bull mix is very special. I had selected 15 dogs at the shelter to choose from. She was the third one on the list and I had decided to meet all of them before choosing the one to adopt. But when we got together in the meeting area I knew she was the one and decided on the spot to take her home with me that day. I am not sure who selected whom but it has turn out to be a perfect match. I hate to leave the house and leave her behind, especially the way she looks at me as I go out the door. But I sure enjoy the enthusiastic greeting I receive on my return. Let it be know that she lives the ‘Life of Riley’, no small measure because of me.
