Listener Stories

Beauty

My heart is breaking today because I received word  that my beautiful, elderly Quarterhorse mare, “Black Beauty” passed away at my friend’s ranch where she was retired.  She passed away in her sleep, my friend told me, wearing her favorite warm blanket, resting on a bed of shavings in her cozy stall.  Beauty was a roping horse in her young years, then a backyard show horse for a young girl and when I bought her, she became a wonderful trail horse, carrying me on hours long trail rides up in the nearby hills.  When I first got her, she tested me and my skills as a rider. She leaped like a Grand Prix jumper over creeks rather than ford them by walking. Even though she was not a beginner\’s horse, she was gentle with our son who was just 3 yrs old. He is now a young man. I was blessed to have her and very blessed to have such a good friend to care for her in her retirement.  We miss you, my beautiful  girl.  Beauty was 28 yrs old.

Harry

We adopted our greyhound, Harry, 9 years ago after a 2 year career on the racetrack.  Everyone who saw Harry was taken by his beauty.  We loved him for his patience with our other 2 dogs, his quiet kindness with us and others.  He loved going for rides in the car and his large soft pillow bed.  When the vet told us he had bone cancer, we were devastated.  Because of his age, amputation  wasn’t advised, so we gave him pain meds as long as we could before the meds stopped working. We said good-bye to him 3 weeks ago.  He was a beloved soul and was our best friend.

Georgie

Our little dog “Georgie” passed away Oct 15th. He was eleven, and his health had been failing. He had a good day with a trip from Texas to Oklahoma. He loved to ride in cars.

We were taking a trip to Kansas. Our Son, Jesse, was visiting a college. We left Georgie in Oklahoma with his favorite people, my Mom and Dad. During the afternoon, he seemed restless and went outside with my Mother and laid down beside her on the porch and quietly passed away. Our little dog, Tiki, walked over and laid his head over Georgie as if to say goodbye.

Georgie was a sweetheart and spent his last day with all those that he loved. He was buried in Oklahoma at my parents home – a favorite place of his.

He was my Son’s dog. We watched as Jesse tenderly carried his pet to a pear tree and gently bury him. That day, my son became a man.

God places these little creatures in our home to love, and they give so much in return. We will always remember and love our little Georgie.

Faydra

A little over a year ago my son had a friend who could not keep her puppy, a pit bull/boxer mix names Faydra where she was living so we took her in temporarily. Faydra was still her dog so she would come and take her and see here and stuff. but in the meantime we were falling in love with her. she was so smart and friendly and playful. we have’nt gotten a dog in a long time because financially we were strapped and feel like we couldn’t afford one. Well finally my sons friend moved to  a place and she couldn’t have the dog there, so she finally gave here to us. we are so blessed to have her. she is a wonderful companion to our family. almost like having another kid around. and some how we are able to take care of her financially as well. my son helps buy food for her so were doing ok. now i would never part with her. Now she will be 2 next march. I think its terrible the way pit bulls are portrayed in the news. its simply not true. they are the most wonderful dogs ever. very loyal to their people and she listens very well.

Piper

Piper is a free ranging Axis deer that thinks I am her mom. I raised her from a fawn she has had 4 of her own. Likes to jump in the truck and go for rides, sleeps at our back door and insist on getting her back rubbed daily.
