Listener Stories

Biddy

My son Max found Biddy as a puppy. Someone had slit his neck. Together, Max and Tara took turns taking care of the puppy they named Iddy Biddy. Biddy joined Pepper and Buddy and they became fast firends. While visiting in El Paso, Biddy jumped the fence. No one knows who the driver was but all said the car sped up to hit Biddy on purpose. The tears, the loss and the photos of better times are all that remain of our Iddy Biddy. Thank you for this space, for your book, for your time.

Sincerely

Gennie and Sherman

My late husband had two dogs, Sherman and Gennie, when we married, I had two cats. They never really got to the level of being friends. The week before my husband Joe died, the cats and dogs instisted on sitting on the couch with Joe four nights in a row. Now these dogs and cats did not even enter the same room, let alone sit on the same couch. Looking back I know they knew Joe would be dying and wanted to be with him. Joe died the next week. that was in October 2006. Joe had been battling kidney diesease. Gennie and Sherman showed how much they missed Joe by not eating, not wanting to be picked up by anyone else and within four months Gennie died and this past September Sherman had to be put down for kidney faliure. Those two little dogs love their master so much, they did not want to live without him.
I know some where in heaven there is a place for pets and owners to be together again. Sherman and Gennie deserves to be with their Joe.

Mr. Tiger and Ms. Tova

I do not write very well but I feel that after listening to you talk about your “beloved” dog Sprite I can only say that I feel the same way about the loss of my two dogs.

A day does not go by that I do not think of my Mr. Tiger and Ms. Tova. They are brother and sister cocker spaniels and we had them since 1991. We adopted the dogs from a family in Maryland and they fit right into the family.

We had to put Ms. Tova down in 2004 after three operations for cancer the previous tow years. The last time there was a tumor wrapped around her aorta and the doctor said that she could not be saved and she sould be allowed to go with her dignaty. At the end she could not see and could not hold her bowls any longer but if it were a case of money there could not be enough that I would not spend to have her with me today. Tiger lasted until last year and just ran out of gas after 16+ years. He had lost alot of weight and he had touble seeing also. I love my dogs and talk to them every night as we have their ashes. My new pet (a Barn Cat) that adopted us sits and we talked to the “Guys” before I give her her night treats.

Again I am sorry that you lost your freind Sprite and hope you can have a relationship with your new dog just as rewarding as you had with Sprite. I hope someday I will be able to have a relationship with my new pets.

Sincerely,

John from VA

Waldo

My dog was a wonderful Dalmation named Waldo. He came to us by way of a divorce and my husband and I fell in love immediately. His original name was Baron and we are a simple family and the name Waldo just fit him. We live in Suburbia and Waldo was the master of his domain. Years passed and Waldo started to limp and then barely walked at all and then stopped walking altogether. We found a wonderful Veterinary Hospital that specialized in saving the unsaveable. Well, we brought him to the hospital and the operation took many hours..he died on the operating table..but they revived him and the fee for this operation was as big as the year 1,900 plus and this was 25 years ago. We were told this may come back and we were so in love and so happy to have him back we never gave “some day” a thought. But 2/3 years passed and it all started again. i would carry him to work with me. My husband would shower with him. We have him acupuncture. Hydrotherpy anything not to have him put down. We fed him loved him and found someone else to help from the University of Pennsylvania. This time the operation failed and he never walked again. We were all devistated and our own vet fell in love with Waldo and called us and gave us pain medicine and anything to help our treasure. In the summer by July it was evident that nothing was going to help and we had to put him down. That day was the most horried day of my life.

Laddie

Thank you for writing the book about your precious Sprite. It was such a sweet story. I have a 14 yr. old Sheltie named Laddie who has been with me since he was a puppy. I know the day is coming all too soon that I will be faced with some tough decisions. I love how you planted a tree in memory of your Sprite. What a wonderful idea.
We share the same opinion of dogs, they are not pets they are family. I call Laddie the human dog. Thanks again the book was a real treat.

Merkava’s Poem

You can search for a lifetime to find a true friend. A faithful old companion who will be there through thick and thin. Someone who shares your laughter and your many pains and fears, but helps you get through them all for many, many years.
I have a friend like that but now she’s gone so I wrote this in her honor cause God called her home.
She played ball with my children, she was there when I was sick, and I never could convence her to get that damed old stick.
So if all dogs go to heaven, she will be there with a smile. She’ll meet me at the pearly gates when I walk my last mile.
