Listener Stories

Vinnie, Luci, Sally and Stella

Dear Mark.,
The picture of Sprite says it all!! It’s all in his eyes!! What a loveable Dog!

I have 4 Pit Bulls that I could not live without! They are the most wonderful, gentle dogs imaginable ! Because of their Breed the city in which we live in has tried to take them away and have them put down!! Also we have had to pay literally thousands of dollars on boarding and legal fees to defend their rights This included re-mortgaging our home to pay for their defense!! Also having to rent an additional home in another nearby city that allows “Pit Bull”s”. We have had to Hide the dogs many times from the police to save them. It’s not fair ..these dogs get a BAD RAP…It is how a Dog is raised that makes ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE.!!
I would do it all over again for my Vinnie, Luci, Sally and Stella. I love these dogs more than anything or anyone!! IIn the past I have cried more over the loss of my dogs then people I know!!REMEMBER DOG SPELLED BACKWARDS IS GOD!! God Bless You and your beautiful Dogs!!
Sincerely,

Pat from Michigan

Mark – I’ve been a fan for quite some time, but until I heard you on Rush’s show today, I didn’t know about any of this. I, too, am an obsessive dog lover. In fact, my wife and I support the local Italian Greyhound (IGGY) rescue group. At present, we have 8 IGGY’s and three other dogs, for a total of 11. In May, I lost my favorite IGGY to chronic kidney failure. He, like your Sprite, was a fighter. (more…)

Rinny

I just heard Mark on Rush’s show. As I write this my beloved Rinny lies close-by. Last week they told me she had cancer and I am truly crushed…having no close family, my georgeous dogs are indeed my kids.
I am watching Rinny every second…I use her favorite things to judge how she feels…I have cooked her steak…chicken…offered ice cream…so far her interest in food remains…a ride in the car still has interest. She has deteriorated and I will not let her suffer a second. She will let me know when it is time..I have always had dogs since I was a boy and have gone through this before…but as Mark said, how different it is when the decision is yours.

What is easy in this situation is to cry..I do not care one whit about showing emotion about my beloved dogs…What may be surprising to some is depth of grief a man can suffer over the loss of ‘THE MOST PERFECT FRIEND”…It will be any time now and my heart is breaking….the world with all its’ nonsense fades away and loses all importance at a time like this…never take them for granted..not even for a second…and I never did.

Sammy

Our Baby Sammy …we found him on the internet not long after my other baby Mickey died. He woke me up one morning almost screaming!! I have never heard a dog scream, called my husband and he came home from work. Our baby was 16 years old. I found him when he was a little guy in the corner of a cage being bitten by other big dogs. I knew he was mine and loved him every day I had him. That terrible morning we took him to the vet and the vet told us because of his age not much could really be done. (more…)

Amber the Wonder Dog

Amber was a blonde, well, amber colored dog. She featured a white scarf and favored red collars for her tags. She had dainty deer feet, which she crossed in lady-like fashion when at rest. Her tail ended in a white plume with a black patch close to her tail, similar to a beagle. She was part border collie, and had that working dog nature. When spoken to she would cock her head to one side and look at you intently, alert to get going or simply to please.

Her real job was keeping the yard squirrel free. We also had less visits from raccoons once she came to live with us. Many a possum would pause on the fence traversing our yard and stay frozen until we came to investigate the barking dog leaping at the fence in a highly offended manner at the intruder. This was a common night time occurrence at any hour. (more…)

Tasha

I just purchased your book and on the way home there you were on Rush.  I am 79 yr old and we have
had alot of dogs in our lifetime but our last dog had lymphoma and the vet gave her prednison and she lived 5 more months. I was devastated when she had to be put to sleep. I cried for 3 weeks like you could not eat or sleep. We then went to Atlanta Pet Rescue and rescued Sam he was abused, shot in the eye, they knocked
alot of his teeth out, but he is the sweetest dog and hubby & I adore him. You are so right Mark, if you are getting a dog PLEASE PEOPLE GO TO THE RESCUE WEBSITES. These pets will love you when no one else does.
Your Griffen looked just like our Tasha that had lymphoma. Tasha had to be put to sleep Oct 3rd 2006. We loved her so much. Thanks Mark for the book.
