Listener Stories

Miracle

This holiday season with love and compassion in our hearts, Dreamy Doggy Company is proud to have partnered with Animal and Control of New York City to raise funds for its STAR (Special Treatment And Recovery) program through the sale of Miracle STAR Magnets.

The magnets are available for sale online on Dreamy Doggy Co.’s home page: http://www.dreamydoggy.com

The STAR program provides stray and abandoned animals with much needed medical attention and helps to place these animals into loving homes. Without the STAR program; many animals would have to be euthanized.

The hand crafted STAR magnet is named after Miracle, a stray and severely abused shepherd mix who was saved by the NYCACC. Miracle now works as a humane educator, visiting schools.

Please help our campaign to inform the public about the STAR program and the Miracle STAR Magnets in order to generate funds for this special cause.

Thank you and wishing you a happy holiday season.

Barney

On June 28th, 2001 our beloved Cocker Spaniel named Barney passed away. His passing coincided with what would have been my mother’s first birhtday after her own passing. Suffice to say that what had already been an emotional day for me only got worse when my wife called to tell me that he had passed.

I loved that dog but my daughter (she was 10 at the time) and my wife adored the dog. In fact I had always joked that my wife’s preference placed me third behind our daughter and Barney!. I always said that in jest but the reality is that I understood this hierarchy! The loss of this “member of our family” touched us all tremendously. (more…)

Choppie

My dog choppie was an animal shelter dog we rescued as a puppie. She was a very loyal dog that went through a lot including a move across the country. She loved her hoe so much that even though she was eighteen years old (aprox in human years) she tried to protect the home from a bear. the bear attacked her and she had her back broken. I had to make the decision to put her down. I remember her last few moments. She looked into my eyes and looked so sad to have to go….

Muffin

I am only 12 but feel your pain. I just finished reading your book and cried alot at the end. I never lost a dog to death but I really fell in love with Sprite. My grandma got rid of a dog named Muffin. She put her up for adoption because of her seperation problem. I really miss her. I don’t know how you dealt with Sprites death but I think I would have risked the surgery because that way he may have had a chance. I hope Pepsi and Griffen are doing good still though.

Remy

Dear Mark,
My husband bought your book for me as we are facing a rough battle with our beloved Remy, a 9 year old female Weimaraner. She was diagnosed with skin cancer 8 months ago. The treatment that they recommended was chemotherapy with only a 60% chance of success. We have chosen not to put her thru that course of treatment an let her live out her days for as long as she can, with us and our two cats and two other dogs. She is in no pain as of yet although she has slowed down but still as happy as ever.

When I found out about her cancer I was devastated and cryed alot. Remy has touched my life like no other pet that I have had. She is always so loving and very needy but I love her so much. Your book was so enlighting as I thought that I was overreacting about her leaving me and our family and that my feelings were way out of whack.
Only a loving dog owner can feel the way we do.
When the time comes for me to decide on putting Remy to sleep I will think of your strength and know that it’s best as it’s not right to let our pets suffer.
No matter how many other dogs I will have in my life there will only be one Remy, she truly entered my life when I needed to be a “parent”.

She has the most beautiful eyes and a loving personality. She can seem to sense when I need a bit more love and is always there wagging her tail and carrying her favorite toy in her mouth and sits right besides me.
Thank you again for bringing to light the great bond we have with our “four-legged family members”.
If only we could give that unconditional love and trust to all as our dogs do we sure would be in a better environment.

Conrad, Casey

Our family lost our beloved Cock-a-poo, Conrad, in 2002 shortly after he turned 15. We’d had him since he was 6 weeks old and adopted him from a shelter the day before he was scheduled to be put to sleep. A couple of weeks after our boy died, my mom and I were in a local Pet Smart, which was having an adopt-a-thon. While there, we spotted the most beautiful Chow Mix — a cinnamon red princess of a girl with the brightest brown eyes I’ve ever seen. It was love at first sight! While filling out the paper work that would enable us to take our Casey home, we learned a little bit about her history. About six months prior to her coming into our lives, she was beaten up and thrown out of a car by the man who “owned” her. Folks who were in a car behind them saw what was happening and picked her up after she was thrown out. Casey endured two surgeries for the injuries she received and was under the care of our local animal protection league when we took her home.
Today, she is an extremely spoiled and happy 6 year old who is always there with “Casey hugs and kisses” when I come home from work! She enjoys numerous tummy rubs and scratches and playing with her favorite toy, a stuffed frog.
