Jake, Dr. Pepurr

Hi Mark,
I am a 17 year old girl from NJ, and I wanted to say that I read Rescuing Sprite, and I loved it. The same thing happened to my family and I with our dog Jake.

You had me laughing aloud through pats, and crying like a baby through others.

One thing that I thought was funny was that you have the soda pop dogs, and I have the soda pop cat.
My cat\’s full name is Dr. Pepurr (like a cat\’s purr) but I call him Pepsi for short.
So he\’s two sodas in one.

I thought that you would find this funny.
God bless you and your family,

Roseanne from NJ

Three German Shepherds

Just finished reading \”Rescuing Sprite\”, and, after drying my tears and wiping my nose, I decided to look you up to tell you how much your story touched me.

We have German shepherds, three of them currently, and have lost three in less than four months just three years ago.

No, Mr Levin, you never get over grieving for your dogs.    How can you not miss that unconditional love?  New dogs may come into your life, and you will love them, and they inturn will love you, but a day won\’t go by that you aren\’t reminded of the uniquenes that each dog is.  They all have their own personalities, quirks and habits—these are what make each one an individual.

When we have to let them go, be it naturally or with help, we will face the guilty thought \”what if?\”  The truth is, we will never know the answer.  The real truth is, the dogs who have passed loved us with such abandon that they would never ask \”what if?\”

Did you rescue Sprite, or did he rescue you?  I know, without a doubt, that my dogs have rescued me, and continue to do it on a daily basis.  Had a bad day at work?  Come home and greet those grinning faces and wriggling bodies.

Love your dogs, both past and present, Mr Levin.

Sapper and Lucky

I have two dogs, Sapper and Lucky. I currently serve in the Army Reserves and in my civilian life I work at Petco. I must admit that I spoil my pets. Lucky came into my life shortly after i moved back to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. She was a Katrina puppy and she is a mixed breed but she also has a Napolean complex. She stands about 18 inches high on her tip toes. She also insists on being the alpha dog.

When I joined the Army in 2007, she would stay at my parents\’ house when I would go to perform my duties as a soldier. Whenever I got home she would greet me and be as happy as any dog could be, she would also be joined in greeting me by a lab mix named Hootie. When I would go for my runs, both dogs would join me for the run. Sadly, in early 2008 Hootie\’s age caught up with him and he made a hard and fast decline in health. I knew the end was near. Last year I received a copy of Rescuing Sprite from Mr. Levin and I must say that it was a very moving book. As I was facing the inevitable end for Hootie, I read the book again.

In June of 2008 I found another puppy, a Lab and Border Collie mix who loved to dig and was very intelligent for a dog, since being in the Army, I named him Sapper. He was able to spend time with Hootie learning the ropes of being a good dog and became a giant baby brother to Lucky. He also made good friends with my nephew\’s Weimeranner. Sapper may not replace Hootie, but he is proving that he is a faithful and loving companion.

When Hurricane Gustav hit my town, I kept both Lucky and Sapper at my parents\’ house as a safe place to stay while I evacuated to a military base in Northern Lousiiana. Gustav destroyed my home (and my pets\’ home) and they have been staying with my parents until I can find a place to live. Among the losses of my property was my copy of Rescuing Sprite and despite this, my dogs are happy to see me when I visit them every day and they also have not forgotten who \”Daddy\” is. They do miss their best friend, my cat Sergeant Louie (Louie was named after Danny Devito\’s Character on Taxi because he was a little loudmouth and when I joined the army he decided to become and Army cat and fight a global war on mice).

I am now in the process of Locating a new place to live and I know that my pets will be glad to have their new home as well, I cannot find any more loyal and loving companions than Lucky and Sapper.

Ailing Dog

My 12yr. old German Shepherd is slowly unable to come upstairs with us,control her bladder,or walk any distance. Her hips are lowered and she has difficulty righting her paws(nuerologial disease).I am somewhat in denial. I would like to read Mark’s book, but not sure it would be helpful.
Thanks,

Dakota

My husband and I rescued “Dakota” 13 years ago. We found her, or I like to say, she found us on a very rainy evening. This summer Dakota was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer. She fought the fight and we tried every option given to us. Unfortunately we decided to end her suffering on November 18th.
I think about her first thing in the morning and she is the last thing I think about before I go to sleep. It is still very raw and I miss her more every day. I hold the good memories very close and feel lucky to have had her in our lives. Meet you at the bridge “DODIE”.

Phoebe, Wally, Lindy

When my cat of 16 yrs passed away of kidney failure (during the time of the tainted petfood) I swore I would never get another pet. Well 6 months later I decided I wanted a dog. I drove an 18 wheeler with my husband so I knew it would have to be a small dog. We lived in San Diego then so my daughter and I went to the San Diego Humane Society. It is a really nice place. All the pets are in rooms that are made to look like livingrooms.
Unfortunatly all the little dogs had 2 or 3 holds on them. I was told to go over to Animal Control which is in the same building. That place is AWEFUL!! All the dogs are in small cages with concrete floors. There were alot of Pitbulls. One of them had the biggest head I had ever seen on a dog. He was a sweetheart. I cried because I knew he would never find a home and would be put done. In the last row we went done there was a little dog. I asked about her and s told she was just brought in. I said I wanted her.
About an hour later I was taking her home. My husband wasn’t exactly thrilled. She is now HIS girl. Read the rest of this entry »
