Tasker

I had to make the hardest decision of my life, a little over two years ago when I had to put my 13 year old Maltese to sleep. Tasker was named after Steve Tasker of the Buffalo Bills. Although Tasker only weighed 5 pounds, he was a fighter. He had an enlarged heart and was on various medicines for 2 and ½ years. The house seemed so empty after he was gone. I only waited 2 weeks to get another dog. I knew I couldn’t replace Tasker, so I decided on a Yorkie. I now have Magnum. Magnum is 2 years old and an absolute delight. We are taking agility lessons and spend lots of quality time together.

I loved your book, Rescuing Sprite. While it brought back sad memories of having to make the decision to say goodbye, it also made me look back on all the good times with Tasker. Having a dog is truly a blessing.

Kelsey

Meet Kelsey. We got as a pup.

My husband who had always dreamed of having a dalmation, finally realized his dream when the kids and I found an ad in the local paper in Feb of 1995. We went out to the farm and met the wee ones when they were a couple weeks old and their spots were coming in. The kids instantly fell in love with the “runt” of the litter who had a heart shaped spot on her. Also after doing much research into the breed, we knew what to look for, for a family pet.
You see, a dalmation’s spots determine wether or not they can be a show dog and Kelsey would have never been able to show and would not sell as a the others that brought big dollars. Though we bought Kelsey from a breeder, we know in our hearts that we rescued her from a life of being cooped up, as to them her only use would be for breeding.
At 7 wks old, she came home with us and it wasn’t long before she learned that “Trucking” is one of the coolest things. To this day, even though she is 14 and doesn’t have that same spring she used to have to be able to leap into the semi on her own, she reamains the constant rider and guardian of our Peterbilt.
We know her time with us is getting very limited, but she will forever be in our hearts and we will always brag about our “trucking buddy” long after she has gone on to the great “dog heaven” where we are sure that they run free and happy with no more pain.

Kayla

Thought you might be interested in hearing about one of our two late pups. kayla was one of 13 born on Christmas eve 1990. as it turned out she was the dominant female, a quality she embraced w/zeal throughout most of her life. however it was her enormously broad character that distinguished her. among her stronger traits was an incredible possessiveness of family and property contrasted by what seemed to be a bottomless patience and gentleness with those she loved. the list of unigue qualities could only be bested by her intense love of family. chief among them was her insistance on sleeping between mom and dad, even @ 105 lbs. though not allowed on the furniture, kayla would sit by the bed looking longingly at the open space calling her name. then w/great patience and ninja like sleuthness, she would inch her way one paw at a time onto the bed, with the last leg quivering in spasms until literally clinging to the edge like a cartoon dog. imperceptively (at least to kayla) she would slink ever so stealth like until reaching a point where her weight alone would act as a deterent, then quickly she would spin around, her head to our feet and her cannon to our faces and settle in for the night. now gone for more than 5 years she left a permanent imprint on our hearts. we miss her deeply mostly because she embodied so much of the character we humans are drawn to, indeed that boundless, selfless unconditional love so often the domain of canines.

Rescued Dog

My boyfriend and I rescued a dog from a park porta pottie a cold march night at 10pm we cared for him for 2 months fell in love with him and gave him everything his little heart desired. Sadly are lives became hard when we lost our apartment and had to move back with our parents. My parents own a 12 year old dog who does not get along with other dogs and my boyfriend has a 16 year old cat so things got a little crazy.
We had to make the very difficult choice to give him to the dumb friends league :(! He was the best puppy anyone could ask for so adorable a half border collie/ german shepard mix very smart. I pray he ends up with the best family with kids and a big back yard he deserves the best of the best. I truly believe the dumb friends league will care and give my little guy a good home!
I read rescuing sprite and loved it and someday when the time is right will adopt again and provide a wonderful home for a furry friend! Thanks Mark for telling your story and i know how it feels to be sad over a dog as i am not over my little evan!!!

Amos

Amos is a 10 yr. old English Mastiff that I rescued in January of this year. We have fallen in love with this magnificent old soul. He just celebrated his 10th birthday with us on 5/14/09. Shortly after we adopted Amos we found out he had bone cancer in his front left leg.
We were devastated to know that his time with us would most likely be shortened, but we have started treatment and he is responding very well, is happy and not in pain. Our goal is to make up for the quality life Amos didn’t have before he came to live with us. We will cherish each and every day we have with this gentle giant.
