Listener Stories

Charlie and Stanley

My family and I have rescued 4 dogs (we have 5 total). But since we live on a horse ranch, we’ve got plenty of room for our dogs. In the past 3 years, we’ve rescued a Chihuahua-mix, a pure-bread “tea-cup: Chihuahua, a registered Border Collie and a registered German Shepherd. The two smallest dogs were “found” during the dead of Winter as puppies. Basically, they were left on the road to die (and wouldn’t have lasted more than minutes had we not seen them quickly). The only dog we “paid for” was our 10 year old Golden Retriever. And yes, the horses and dogs get along fine (most of the time). Picture in your mind horseback riding on the Northern Plains with riders carrying a “tea-cup” Chihuahua and 4 other dogs trailing behind; that’s us! Here’s a picture of a couple of our dogs, Charlie and Stanley. Stan is the “tea-cup” Chihuahua.

Butters, Star and Pepper

My story is about 3 dogs:  Butters, Star and Pepper.  Butters was an adorable friendly mixed breed we found on a Thanksgiving Day.  He lived with us until May 29, 2007 where he died when our house caught on fire.  Star, was our Shetland Sheepdog.  Star survived the fire.  We got her when she was just a puppy.  She had a black star on her head amongst a white stripe.  She died June 1, 2009.  She was my baby girl.  We don\’t really know why she died, but we think the fumes from the burning plastic eventually gave her cancer.  She had lost a lot of weight and wouldn\’t eat the last 2 weeks of her life.  She was born November 25, 2000–she was 8 years old.  Pepper was a stray we rescued off the street.  She\’s very active and just adores kids.  She\’ll just plain lick you to death given the chance.  As it is she\’ll jump all over overly excited.  We have her tamed some except when company comes over she goes into overdrive.

Now another story–due to all the hardships we\’ve had to endure since Hurricane Katrina, they are on the verge of losing their home.  Star and Butters graves are in the back yard.  I\’ll never be able to see my babies again and I miss them terribly.  I might add we bought our home the right way, now through problems using up all our savings our home is scheduled for foreclosure sale next month.

Our dogs are our children.  We have left, Bandit, Scruffy and Pepper.  All three of them are rescued off the street.  (more…)

Jacky

When I found Jacky in a field behind my work, she was so malnourished you could see her entire rib cage. She was covered with ticks and ring worm was eating at the flesh on her ears. She also walked with a very bad limp as if she had been kicked or possibly clipped by a car. My wife and I took her home that night, cleaned her up and it was off to the vet the next day. We were told she was only about a year and a half old and luckily, the limp was just a bad sprain. Jacky was always good around the young children in the neighborhood, and it wasn’t until a concerned parent told my wife she thought Jacky was a Dingo, we decided to research her breed. Much to our surprise, Jacky is a Dingo, a Dixie Dingo or Carolina Dog. These dogs date back to the founders of this great country and have been featured in Smithsonian Magazine as the first American dog. These wild dogs are now being bred and are extremely intelligent. Jacky will cock her head as if she understands, and amused us the other day when we asked where her moo moo was and she pulled the cow out of her toy basket and brought it to us! She can selectively pick out anything we ask her to bring.

Zenno

Zenno, my American Bulldog, is trying to figure out how to e-mail you with his ideas about enhanced interrogations. Please note that he is an American Bulldog, not English, not French.

Lisa & Frank

I got Lisa as a 6 week old doxie mix….I brought her home in a shoe box!! She is now a 9 month old, very opinionated, young lady!! She’s my best friend and my snuggly wuggly. Her best friend is my cat, Frank, who I got at 8 weeks old, 2 months previous to getting Lisa…I got a rabbit from my son and his wife and Lisa loves to go by the cage and play with him too…she takes toys over and drops them by the cage and by her expression, I know she can’t understand why the rabbit doesn’t care! She pays no attention to my Finches, although Frank, the cat, certainly does!

Daisy

Daisy was my husband and my first dog. By the time we got her, we had four children. Our two youngest kids were only 1 & 2 at the time. Daisy was with us for 13 years. She passed away this last April. My two youngest kids, now teenagers literally do not remember life without her. She was a very sweet and loyal girl. Daisy worshiped my husband. As far as she was concerned, the sun rose and set with him. She would have done anything for him. If he was ever gone for a few days, when he returned, she would whimper, whine, and literally shudder until he gave her enough attention. She was horribly jealous of me! One night, while my husband and I were sitting close together on the couch watching a movie, I had my hand on my husbands leg. I was distracted by the movie and vaguely realized that my hand had been moved off my husband’s leg several times. It wasn’t until about the third time that I looked down and realized that Daisy was wedging her nose underneath my hand, and pushing it off my husband’s leg!! We will all miss her very much, and there is a memorial of daisies in our backyard in her honor.
