Listener Stories

Sophia

Sophia is a Yorkshire Terrier. She is 10 yrs. old in human years. She is spoiled rotten. She thinks every time I go to the door she has to leave with me. She will only bite at my ankles or my hands if I try to stop her from going. I have been told she paces the house until I get home. She is very loving and a lap dog. She has a mental problem. Other dogs can visit and that is great but they can’t spend the night or she winds us vomiting blood and she will stop eating. She loves my children’s two cats. I don’t know whether she thinks she is a cat or a human. She is very sweet apart from her wanting to get her way.

Lad

Mr. Levin, thanks for all you do. I’m in the military and I love my country but boy oh boy, I’m glad I have my dog he keeps me sane.

Here is a quick story about Lad our dog. While I was in Iraq my dog Duke died, he ran into a sliding glass door and broke his neck. My wife was very, very upset. She swore we weren’t going to have any more dogs. But three weeks later she felt lonely and made a trip to the city pound. She picked up Lad. He was only a few weeks old. He is a Great Pyrenees Dalmatian mix. So basically I have a long hair Dalmatian. He has been a gift to my wife and I. We are lucky to have him in our life. He keeps her company when I am away, and he listens to me when I start ranting and raving.

Thank you

Iraqi Nightmare

In Iraq , there were many wild dogs. We were protecting a Special Forces base named Aggies, as well as doing patrols, although I NEVER saw a Special Forces person. I was only regular Infantry. We adopted a litter of 5 puppies we found in Mosul . We brought them back to Aggies. Our Commander ordered us to kill all but one because we weren’t there to raise kittens. There were some soldiers who injected them with bleach to kill them for some reason. I did nothing to stop this even thought I was older than most. When that didn’t work, they set them on fire. One of them survived even that. I CANT GET THIS OUT OF MY MIND. Other people died in my 2 tours. I don’t know why I am telling you this, but I need closure. I’m sorry for telling you this, but I feel I must tell someone and I respect you very much.

Asia

We recently lost our 12 year old golden, asia, to cancer. we rescue her when she was 2 (golden rescue of az) and was a beautiful dog with a personality of her own. she was great with our son (now 6) and was loved by all our friends and family. we will miss her greatly but her spirit will live on forever.

Molly

I found Molly when I used to be a civilian worker for the Sheriff’s Dept. She was only about 1.5 pounds and a tiny ball of fur. I found her in the front yard in a poverty stricken neighborhood in the city of Orange. The lady who lived there told me she was dumped the night before and they couldn’t afford a dog. I took the puppy “into custody” and was directed by my sergeant to take her to the pound. Well, I just couldn’t do it so I took her my parents house instead where she instantly won my parents and sister over. She’s been with us ever since!

Nikki, Reggie, Tina, Skye & Lily, Maddie, Bear

Linda just finished reading your book & really enjoyed it. Heartwarming – touches the heart. We have taken in rescue dogs for 15 years. First Nikki, a black/white shepherd-lab mix, who we had to send to dog heaven last year at age 14! Then his dog-mate, Reggie-rescued on his last day at the shelter, he became ill at age 9; then Tina, the sweetest white pit-mix became ill at 10 yrs; and now we have 2 adopted Siberians, Skye & Lily, and Maddie the beagle, and 7mos. old Terrier-mix, Bear-whose family decided they didn’t want him anymore and let him roam the neighborhood to fend for himself.
