Emily

I think I can honestly say that yesterday was THE SADDEST day I have ever had. This morning someone asked me how I was doing. I replied, \”If you would have asked me this question three days ago, I was the happiest person in the world, but I can honestly tell you that today has been THE saddest day I have had in my twenty-seven years alive.\”

I think he thought I hit the jackpot and had my funds seized for taxes or something…LOL…yes, a few days ago, I had more money than I have today. A few days ago, the weather was warmer. BUT, a few days ago, my little baby, Emily was sitting on the couch next to me curled up in a bawl and licking my hand to death!! Her brother, Jonah, was nudging me to pet him too. Emily growled silently as if to say, \”My Mommy..\”

I wish I could have frozen that day in time. But, today, I sit here crying more than I can ever recall and praying harder than I ever had. I sit here wanting this day to fly by as fast as possible and for tomorrow to be here…I have had Emily since she was about six weeks old…boy oh boy, she is one SPUNKY and FEISTY little girl!!! She loves chasing squirrels and being the QUEEN of the house. She always gets her way and we cannot go one day without someone mentioning, \”She is soooooooooooo cute and friendly…\” Friendly?? Beyond belief!! Don\’t allow her to think that you want to pet her or say hello…she rolls over on her back and whines and whines and whines until you rub her belly…LOL…she is a TOTAL flirt too!!!

Jonah came along about two years ago and even when we thought Emily would not allow ANYONE to share her living quarters, she surprised us again…she let him in, let him get comfortable, BUT FIRST, let him know who is BOSS!! EMILY!!! What a blessiig to us he is, I could never ask for a more AMAZING little boy…even through this difficult time, we try hard to hide something is going on but he knows and we can\’t hide it no matter how hard we try… Read the rest of this entry »

A Dogs Life

This is a short story called that I wrote with my dog Slick. I hope you enjoy.

“You’re the best friend anyone could ever have.”
Slick turned onto his back in hopes his mom would rub his belly. He knew the lady wasn’t his real mother, but she’d raised him as if he was her child, and he loved her.
Ahhh, yes. Mmmmm. That felt good. Her bed was his favorite place. That’s when she gave him all of her attention. He looked up and she bared her teeth. It was what people called a smile.
“Slick, I swear you’d lie here all day if I’d just pet you, but I’ve got things to do, boy.”
She stopped rubbing his tummy. Maybe if he nudged her hand with his nose, she’d rub a little longer. It worked most of the time.
“You know just how to get to me, don’t you? I think you’re spoiled.” She moved her fingers up and down his underside. “Maybe after I’m dead and gone, I’ll come back as a dog. Then I could lead a life of leisure just like you do. But–right now, we have to get up.”
Did she know he understood everything she said? He didn’t think so, and he was glad of it. Sometimes he got away with things because of it. He stretched and yawned. It was time to start the day.
She threw back the covers and stood. “You want to go outside?”
That was what he’d been waiting to hear. Yes, of course he wanted to go outside. It had been a long time since he’d visited the tree in the back yard. All night in fact.
He jumped off the bed and ran down the hall. Were the dogs across the way out too? He couldn’t wait to get to the fence so he could bark at them. They didn’t know how lucky he felt to be the only pet in this house. He didn’t have to share his family with anyone. Their love and attention was all his.
Hurry, Mom. Hurry. It seemed like he had to wait, wait, wait. What was taking her so long? He wagged his tale, ran back and forth then jumped with glee when she finally approached.
“Don’t be so impatient. I had to get my slippers on. You’re so cute and guess what, today’s your birthday.” She unlocked and opened the door. “You’re two years old.”
He hopped down the steps. Two wasn’t old, heck, he was still a pup.
“Hey, don’t bark at the neighbor’s dogs this morning.”
Don’t bark, was she crazy? He had to keep up his image. This was his territory. “Ruff, ruff, ruffff, ru, ruff…”

* * *

Slick swiped his paw at his ears. He hated it when the little people put things on his head.
“Leave that on, Slick, we’re going to take your picture.” Read the rest of this entry »

PET’S TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. My life is likely to last 10 to15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Good Girl Daisy

Our beloved Daisy, a Shetland Sheepdog like no other, has been called into service by The Shepherd in Heaven. We know that Heaven is a happier place because of Daisy – she makes friends where ever she goes – but it hurts so much to be without her.
Daisy came to us at a time when we were all still settling in together, she helped us become a family and turned our house into a home. The cats seemed none too thrilled, but that didn’t faze her; she went on to tease and torment them for the rest of their lives. After ‘Precious’ then ‘Jane’ each passed away, Daisy noticed that one of her roommates didn’t make it back from the vet, looked inside the empty cat box, then pined in that sorrowful way that doggies do.
Now, we are all pining for Daisy.
We all loved her and she returned that love to us tenfold.
No-one loved Daisy more, nor showed their love better than my son Scott. After he moved into the house three years ago, Daisy became rejuvenated; we know that she lived a much longer and happier life because of him. He bought her toys and treats, played with her, bathed her and made sure that she stayed active. One other (perhaps minor?) thing that happened when Scott moved in:  he ‘liberated’ Daisy from being forced to sleep in the laundry room. She really seemed to appreciate the new sleeping arrangements, whereby she got to sleep on her very own pillow on the floor of his room. Who’d a thunk it??
She did have a few quirks. You could never really take her for a walk, she would take you. She’d twirl around so much that it was hard to hold on to the leash. But, she was a sheepdog and as far as she was concerned, you were her sheep. Read the rest of this entry »

Lafayette

Lafayette: We had a gorgeous tri-colored basset hound named Lafayette, she was only 7, but we had to put her down due to cancer and complications from surgery just a couple of days ago. It was a hard decision until the vet told us she was suffering and all the treatments, surgery, and medications would probably only put off the inevitable.

My wife is very upset by this due to our dogs young age, and also how attached my wife was not just to this dog, but this breed. We generously give to basset hound rescues all across the country and she keeps in touch with basset hound owners on a nearly daily basis (it’s called the Daily Drool). These are some great people, and the calls have been coming in since word got out, but she’s too upset to take any of them. This will take a lot of time to heal for her and my two sons.

Our memories of her include taking her flying in our private airplane (I’m a commercial pilot and air traffic controller). She was our “Am-Basset-door” for our voter registration drive at the Boulder County Fair Parade out here in Longmont , CO . The picture included was very recent when she was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas time. It was about 10 degrees outside, but she got everyone’s attention and brought in the donations. Thanks Mark for this site and what you do.
