Listener Stories

Radar, Dremel, Jack

Dear Mark
Five years ago we adopted a blind puppy from a shelter. She was to be destroyed by her breeder because she was blind and the runt of the litter. We also came to find out that Radar was not running on all 8 cylinders if you know what I mean.
We decided to get surgery done on her right eye in an effort to gain her some sight. This worked for her. She was able to see out of her right eye and her aggression toward my wife and other dog Dremel subsided somewhat. She was not perfect but she was better.
Two years ago my wife and I had a son Jack. The past two years have been all about gates and fences and keeping Jack away from Radar. We did not trust her with the baby in the least.
Over the coarse of the past 6 months we noticed Radar has been losing it a little bit more. We could not be with the baby without Radar being extremely jealous. She would lash out at Dremel and we did not feel this to be fair to Dremel, Jack or even Radar.
I do not think that Radar could control her behavoir. We decided it was best to put her down. We did this today.
We lost a piece of our family today one that will never be forgotten.
I want to thank you for your books and your radio show. Our family has respect for all men and women who do mince words and who have a deep respect for family (furry and not so furry).
Best Regards

Praying for Rocky’s Family

I know we all are praying for the Rocky the cat’s family. His human called in from the vet to ask Mark to help him get through having to let his beloved pet go. The worst of this, many of us know, is the horrible feeling that we are betraying someone who has without guile always loved and trusted us. I went through this with my brilliant and devoted 17 year old border collie, I know of what I speak. Some comfort I think can be derived from the very love they have given us. I have come at last after three years to understand that if my Beauregaard or Rocky the cat could speak they would tell us, “I know you have done everything possible for my health and comfort. Thank you for being my true friend. I love you, thank you for being here with me now, I will always be with you.” Of all the things we have thought our furry children may have seemed to tell us this is the hardest for us to hear, but if you look back at the relationship that has always existed between you, you will see that it is true. I hope someone is able to offer this small comfort to this man in his time of grief.

The Dog

TO: GOD
FROM: THE DOG
Dear God: Is it on purpose our names are the same, only reversed?

Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one
another?

Dear God: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still
the same old story?

Dear God: Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the
mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a
Dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride!
Would it be so hard to rename the \’Chrysler Eagle\’ the \’Chrysler Beagle\’?

Dear God: If a Dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears
him, is he still a bad Dog?

Dear God: We Dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals,
whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID\’s, electromagnetic energy
fields, and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?

Dear God: More meatballs, less spaghetti, please. (more…)

Amber

I want to again thank you Mr. Levine for allowing us fellow pet lovers the chance to talk about our beloved family members. A while back I wrote about my 16 year old cat Hawkeye who past on some time ago. Sadly, on Sept. 20th, I had to put down my sweat Amber.

Before I talk about my Amber, I wanted to comment on Jerry and his cat Rocky who called this evening at the end of your show. Jerry, I am so very sorry for what you had to do regarding Rocky. I know all to well as a fellow American who loves his cats so very much the pain you feel. As I am sure so many here do as well. Mark said millions are listening to you and feel your pain. Sir, I was one of them. I am not a very religious person, but I do believe in a higher power. You, your brave wife, daughter and Rocky are in my thoughts. I all that you and yours are going through, I hope in my response to your heart wrenching phone call you will find some peace with what I have said. I truly wish all the best to you and your family. When I have put my little friends down, I go back to the poem often. I find these to be very comforting words. Maybe you and many others will too:

“Farewell, Master, yet not farewell
Were I go, ye, too, shall dwell
I am gone, before your face.
A moments time, a little space.
When ye come where I have stepped
Ye will wonder why ye wept”

After death by Edwin Arnold

Amber came into my life shortly after Hawkeye died in 1996. She was 10 weeks old, very cute and full of life like all kittens are. (more…)

Foxy

This is our Siberian Husky, her name is Foxy. She is three years old now. I was always raised to not have an animal in the home. When my girlfriend and her moved in .We almost gave her up. I am so glad we changed our minds Foxy is our best friend. I have had to forgive her for chewing some of my apartment up.I just know in my heart we could not let such a smart and beautiful  animal go. I have recently taught her how to give a Obama fist pound.*LOL*
