I was blessed with parents who loved dogs and cats. Until the day I moved out of my family home, I was surrounded by multiple pets. My career path led me into apartment management and I was not allowed to have a pet. Finally, at age 42, I bought my first home and could realize my dream of having a dog again in my life. I spotted “Max” at our local shelter (1999) and it was love at first sight. Max was a stray and was on a hold for over a week allowing an owner to find him. I visited him daily. He would press himself into the kennel bars as hard as he could so I could get my fingers through to give him a scratch. When the day came that he was available, I went over to get my boy only to find out that someone else wanted him too. A raffle was held and I lost. I went home with my tail between my legs and cried. A couple of days later, I went back and searched up and down the isles hoping to end the agony and find another pet. I stopped by the front desk and asked if they would take my phone number down and call me if for some reason Max was returned all the while thinking “yeah right, a busy city run shelter is really goinging to keep up with that request.” Two nights later my phone call came in. “Your boy is back and you need to pick him up now. We’ll hold the shelter open for you!!!” I sped over there and my life with Max began. He is unconditional love, my best friend, my smile during the darkest days, the reason I’m forced to get exercise, and even stood glued to my side as an intruder was trying to break in to my house. The shelter has since had a 501(c)3 volunteer group form and to thank them for bringing Max into my life, I joined 4 years ago and have given around 1500 hours of my time. It’s a joy to watch a depressed animal light up as he walks out the door to his new life. Thank you so much for giving me this outlet to share my story. Max and I are new fans since you have finally reached the Los Angeles market (at a reasonable hour). Take care.
(Max is a golden retriever/shar-pei mix, 10-11yrs old).
Dear Mark, I listen to your show everyday by streaming it in. I am unable to listen to it live do to the fact that I choose to work for a living and my job doesn’t allow me to listen while working. I am sending this in regards to my dog Jewel, she truly is the pride and joy of my life. I worry about the day I have to put her to sleep. It’s not fair that Dogs don’t live longer. I think it’s the Lord’s way of showing us that Death is a part of Living as painful as it might be. I won’t take up anymore of your time. God Bless you for all you do. We Love ya Mark.

I think I can honestly say that yesterday was THE SADDEST day I have ever had. This morning someone asked me how I was doing. I replied, \”If you would have asked me this question three days ago, I was the happiest person in the world, but I can honestly tell you that today has been THE saddest day I have had in my twenty-seven years alive.\”
I think he thought I hit the jackpot and had my funds seized for taxes or something…LOL…yes, a few days ago, I had more money than I have today. A few days ago, the weather was warmer. BUT, a few days ago, my little baby, Emily was sitting on the couch next to me curled up in a bawl and licking my hand to death!! Her brother, Jonah, was nudging me to pet him too. Emily growled silently as if to say, \”My Mommy..\”
I wish I could have frozen that day in time. But, today, I sit here crying more than I can ever recall and praying harder than I ever had. I sit here wanting this day to fly by as fast as possible and for tomorrow to be here…I have had Emily since she was about six weeks old…boy oh boy, she is one SPUNKY and FEISTY little girl!!! She loves chasing squirrels and being the QUEEN of the house. She always gets her way and we cannot go one day without someone mentioning, \”She is soooooooooooo cute and friendly…\” Friendly?? Beyond belief!! Don\’t allow her to think that you want to pet her or say hello…she rolls over on her back and whines and whines and whines until you rub her belly…LOL…she is a TOTAL flirt too!!!
Jonah came along about two years ago and even when we thought Emily would not allow ANYONE to share her living quarters, she surprised us again…she let him in, let him get comfortable, BUT FIRST, let him know who is BOSS!! EMILY!!! What a blessiig to us he is, I could never ask for a more AMAZING little boy…even through this difficult time, we try hard to hide something is going on but he knows and we can\’t hide it no matter how hard we try… (more…)
This is a short story called that I wrote with my dog Slick. I hope you enjoy.
“You’re the best friend anyone could ever have.”
Slick turned onto his back in hopes his mom would rub his belly. He knew the lady wasn’t his real mother, but she’d raised him as if he was her child, and he loved her.
Ahhh, yes. Mmmmm. That felt good. Her bed was his favorite place. That’s when she gave him all of her attention. He looked up and she bared her teeth. It was what people called a smile.
“Slick, I swear you’d lie here all day if I’d just pet you, but I’ve got things to do, boy.”
She stopped rubbing his tummy. Maybe if he nudged her hand with his nose, she’d rub a little longer. It worked most of the time.
“You know just how to get to me, don’t you? I think you’re spoiled.” She moved her fingers up and down his underside. “Maybe after I’m dead and gone, I’ll come back as a dog. Then I could lead a life of leisure just like you do. But–right now, we have to get up.”
Did she know he understood everything she said? He didn’t think so, and he was glad of it. Sometimes he got away with things because of it. He stretched and yawned. It was time to start the day.
She threw back the covers and stood. “You want to go outside?”
That was what he’d been waiting to hear. Yes, of course he wanted to go outside. It had been a long time since he’d visited the tree in the back yard. All night in fact.
He jumped off the bed and ran down the hall. Were the dogs across the way out too? He couldn’t wait to get to the fence so he could bark at them. They didn’t know how lucky he felt to be the only pet in this house. He didn’t have to share his family with anyone. Their love and attention was all his.
Hurry, Mom. Hurry. It seemed like he had to wait, wait, wait. What was taking her so long? He wagged his tale, ran back and forth then jumped with glee when she finally approached.
“Don’t be so impatient. I had to get my slippers on. You’re so cute and guess what, today’s your birthday.” She unlocked and opened the door. “You’re two years old.”
He hopped down the steps. Two wasn’t old, heck, he was still a pup.
“Hey, don’t bark at the neighbor’s dogs this morning.”
Don’t bark, was she crazy? He had to keep up his image. This was his territory. “Ruff, ruff, ruffff, ru, ruff…”
* * *
Slick swiped his paw at his ears. He hated it when the little people put things on his head.
“Leave that on, Slick, we’re going to take your picture.” (more…)
