Listener Stories

Jack

Jack came to us through an odd series of events.

To backtrack, in March my old yellow Lab/Husky mix friend of 12 years, Sally, became increasingly sick and couldn’t even walk outside. I took her to the emergency clinic and while waiting for tests and x-rays, we just sat in the big, clean lonely waiting room.
Worried about Sally and concerned that this might be serious, we retreated into our private thoughts and rememberances.

Just then, a fellow arrived with a white standard Poodle and took a seat about 10 ft. away. The poodle walked over to me, stopped, laid his head on my lap. He then walked over to my wife and greeted her quietly. With the introductions concluded, he walked back to his human and sat down. It seemed odd that a strange dog would calmly come over and be so friendly…even comforting. Now Poodles aren’t common sights in Alaska and a white one is even less so. We chatted a bit with the owner, and found out he purchased his dog from a local breeder. (more…)

Lady Belle

My dad gave me “Rescuing Sprite” for my birthday a few years ago. I didn’t pick it up to read it until this week. I had to put my sweet dog to sleep on May 3, 2009. I’m so glad I found your book on my bookshelf because it spoke so deeply to my heart. I had my Lady Belle for just over 13 years. She was about 2 when we got her from a friend who had found her on the streets. She was the prettiest and most energetic, sweet dog I’d ever seen. I said to my friend, “If you ever decide to get rid of this dog, call me!!” Two days later I was taking her home to be with me forever. That was February 1996. She was the first dog of mine since becoming an adult (I was just 22) so I was her sole caretaker. I invested a lot in her…time, money, energy, love. She was the best dog I’ve ever known. I used to joke about her outliving us all because she just kept going and going and going. She still had lots of energy before she died, well, a month before she died. Right at the end she didn’t do much of anything but sleep. In January of this year I found a big tumor inside her mouth. We had it removed and all went well…except that it was malignant. I was scared she wouldn’t do well in surgery because she was so old (15 years) but she did great! And she was so much better following the surgery…she was eating better, started gaining weight, had more energy. I thought it was all in the past and we wouldn’t have to worry about it again. The vet said it might come back since it was malignant but I was trying to be positive. (more…)

Cassie, Jade and Cleo

Since our Sammy had passed away, we had rescued 2 cats and a dog recently.

Cassie, Jade and Cleo – are the children.

Cassie, the oldest (Calico), we had to put down a couple of weeks ago. She was a feline Sammy.  Cassie was suffering from a tumor which was affecting her ability to hold food down.  We had her to 4 Vets..and specialist.  Surgery was not guaranteed successful and if so, she may not have lived long.

We adopted Cleo, our Chiuahau – who is about 2 years old.  She has been experiencing activities, food and all types of things that she had never before.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

Leo, Oreo

I have one 12-year old kitty named Leo.  Leo is very laid back and mellow.  1 1/2 years ago, we discovered that Leo was diabetic.  The reason was a combination of excess weight gain and the type of food I was feeding him (I think that he was eating more as the result of losing his \”brother\” Oreo who had lymphoma\”.  Leo has now lost six pounds on the No-Carb diet I feed him.  He still has more weight to lose, but he is more loving energetic and playful.  Thank you for listening.  Your \”right-wing conservative faithful listenrer\”

Sammy

Dear Mark:

Sprite\’s face looks a little like my Sammy.  He was a cocker spaniel who we loved so much.  He was the first dog that I ever had from 6 weeks old to age 13.5 years old, when he passed away.  When he did pass away, he was still waging his little stump of a tail.  He was such a wonderfully pleasant dog.

The more people around, even children, the happier Sam was.  He was my best friend..my 3rd child. It\’s been about 7 years since he has gone to Heaven..and he is in Heaven – and I still miss his company very much.  So many things remind me of him as I go through my activities in the house.

I don\’t have an electronic photo of Sammy; but I will get one made from a snap shot or video and post it.

Thank you for your website and radio show.
