My Dogs

My family has adopted shelter and street dogs ever since I was born (27 years ago). One particular dog was a stray Doberman that had escaped from a dog fighting ring.

She lived with us for 12 wonderful years and every person she met instantly fell in love with her and changed their biased opinion that Dobermans are mean dogs.

Sadly, two years ago I held her in my arms as we had to put her to sleep because of bone cancer.

Less than a week later we adopted another Doberman and more recently I adopted a Doberman/Chesapeake Bay Retriever (shelter) and love her greatly.

Reading your book was difficult but I\’d recommend it to everyone and it may be the most inspiring book ever written.

Mitzi

Mitzi is a rescue dog, half German shepherd and Egyptian besenji. I trained her to dance on her two hind paws, to play dead, to give me ‘five’ and to walk and stop on command as well as going between my legs. She is 40 pounds and is a wonderful pet. I would love to have her perform for you but I am afraid that I cannot attach her photo to you as it is too large that was taken in front of our home in Dana Point, CA.

Bella

I adopted my first dog, Bella, about three months ago. I got her from Pet Rescue, in Larchmont, NY, an organization staffed entirely by volunteers who get dogs from kill shelters in the south and find them homes.

Bella is probably a little over one year old. She’s a black lab mix and is very sweet. She is very shy and scared of most people. She was adopted by a family that couldn’t keep her for some reason before I adopted her. She gets spooked easily, tucks her tail between her legs and crouches very low to the ground and tries to run. It’s very sad.

But she’s made great improvement since I got her, although I’m learning as I go. She loves other dogs and I take her to the dog park and the dog beach, where she loves to swim. She has warmed up to some of my friends who have dogs, and some family members. I hope that she’ll overcome her fears and mellow out with age. But I’m prepared for this to take time.

I am so glad I adopted Bella. She has added so much to my life. I recently got laid off from my job (hence the time for a dog), and when I go back to work, I expect I’ll have to get another dog to keep her company!

Bubba

Dear Mr Levin,
I just finshed reading Rescuing Sprite, and thought I wanted to share my dog story with you.
I found a black chow on the street.  He was a mess. Matted and flea ridden and very thin. He had been on the street for some time. I brought him home, cleaned him up and he became a major part of our family.
I had spinal cancer and had to endure several painful surgerys and radiation and kemo.  No matter how bad I felt or how down I got,Bubba was ALWAYS there to give me love and comfort.
I couldn\’t have gotten thru that without him. He gave me the love and support even my husband couldn\’t (although he was also great thru the entire process.)
He had an unknown heart problem and died while I was out of town.
I was heart broken. I thought I couln\’t ever replace him. It took a long time before I could of thought o getting another dog..
We did get a new dog from the tx aspca. She is  what we like to call a TX pruebred (a mutt). She turned out to be the best friend that you could ask for. Loving and just so happy to have a good home.  She also is a fav with the little kids in the area.  they come by to walk and play with her all the time and she loves it.
I will never forget Bubba or the love and comfort that he gave me when I most needed it.  I like to belave that when I depart this earth that Bubba will be waiting for me on the  other side, with his love and wagging tail. We can go over the rainbow bridge together.
I really enjoyed your book and it did bring me joy to know I am not alone in my love for my animals. Any dog lover can agree,  that dogs are not just \”pets\” but part of the family.
I am so glad that you opened uour heart and home to a new rescue.
Enjoy them as long as they live.

Scotty

This day marks the end of a wonderful life for an amazing dog. Our 11-year-old yellow lab mix Scotty is somewhere running like never before, free of the severe arthritis that crippled his legs and back and prevented him from living like he deserved to live. In our hearts and our minds he was, and will forever be the best dog to ever walk this earth. We miss you dearly Scotty, rest in peace!
