Listener Stories

Shorty (Little Man)

Hi my name is Shorty, or as my mom likes to call me “Little Man”. I am said to be a special needs pup. Back in my puppy days, I chewed an electrical cord and hurt my mouth. I ended up losing most of my tongue in the accident. Then soon after the accident, my owners took me to a shelter to be put down. They said they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. Lucky for me, the Dachshund Rescue of North America stepped in & took a chance with me. My foster mom said that I was so thin & dehydrated, she wasn’t sure I would make it. But I’m a tough little guy, and started to learn how to drink water from a medicine syringe, and of course how to eat.
In December of 2006, my foster mom got a call from someone named Kristina. Her and her husband, Michael saw my picture on the Rescue website and read my story, and fell in love with me. They were coming to visit me. When they got there, I won them over with my good looks and charm. I knew they were taking me home & they did.
When I first arrive at my new home, things were shaky. I had two big sisters, Tigger and Tuesday. At first I wasn’t sure if they would like me, so I tried to be brave. After I few weeks, it was like we had always been together. (more…)

Zahara and Sarg

I would have posted these together, but I could only do one picture at a time.

Since the death of my boy Rosco, we moved from the land of Granholm to the land of Sanford.

After moving to SC we purchased a house (and yes, after the bubble popped) on 2 acres of land surrounded by woods.  Again, my wife wanted protection while I was away on the road.  This time, I came home to twins.  Cambria and Zahara.  Both yellow lab / Chow mixes.  She says they were the last two of a litter to go.  Cambria turned out to be mean and we couldn\’t keep her for fear of our children.  A neighbor took her and she is living a wonderful life.

Zahara was the complete opposite from her sister.  Her only quirk is that when she wants out, she wants out.  After two broken windows we finally put in a doggy door for her.  She only leaves our yard to visit her sister.  She is a great dog that is wonderful with the kids and was very easy to train.  She is an odd girl that loves to have fun.

Then, while at a store, my found seen an ad for a free dog.  Sargent Puppy is now a member of our family.  He is Boston Bull Terrier / Pug mix.  I hear they call this mix Bug.  He is another one with a very odd personality but a very good dog.

Zahara and Sarg hit it off right away and are the best of friends, as seen in the picture.

Thank you Mark for all you do and for allowing me to share my stories.

Rosco

As a truck driver, my wife wanted a man around the house for protection. So she went to our local country run pound and found her man.

Rosco was a 3 year old American Rot and still had his tail. When she told me about him, the first thing I said was that if he didn’t let me in the house, he was history.

From the first day I met him, he became my dog. He was the best friend a guy could ask for. He was as gentle as a cat. We figure he was professionally trained since he was very very obedient. He followed me everywhere.

When our cat had her kittens, he was their toy once they were old enough to run around on their own. And the way he played with them, you could have sworn he was just an overgrown kitten himself.

5 years later he ended up with bloat and that took him away from me. He will always be my best friend and is remembered everyday.

The picture I added with this post is of him in his chair. When we tried to toss the old raggedy chair out, he became depressed until we brought back in the house and put it in the living room with us.

I miss you Rosco.

Jake

Around July 21st of 2008, I came home from work to be greeted by my wife and son in the driveway. My wife was cradling something but I had no idea what it was immediately. Then she unfolded her arms and behold there was this tiny little puppy! When I say tiny, i mean really tiny. It couldn’t have been more than a couple of weeks old. When I asked whose puppy it was, my wife joyfully said “it’s Yours, if you want it!”. Oh I think it took me all of 1 second to say “great”! I took it into my hands and then asked where it came from? My son, Jeff, said he and his girlfriend were walking through the Cleveland Metro-Parks system when they heard whining coming from the underbrush. There they found “Jake” abandoned and obviously scared stiff. How cruel, I thought to myself, that people can abandon a little defenseless puppy like that. There are coyotes and other wild creatures lurking in these woods, and it would’ve been just a matter of time before Jake would become a victim. Mark, my wife and I had been searching rescue missions for a nice yellow lab, but this little guy was a gift. He’s mixed breed, but is mostly pit bull. We surmised that recent ordinances passed in the city of Lakewood, Ohio against vicious dogs, namely pit bulls, forced some idiot to dump his puppy(s) in the woods rather than face the authorities. It has been a blessing for me especially having Jake. He is remarkable. He never once had an accident in our home, in fact, from early on, he barked when he wanted to go outside. To this day, 3 barks means you’d better let me outside or else! He is adorable and big now that he is about a year old. He weighs in at about 87 lbs. and he is all muscle with a big, deep bark. But everyone I meet that is greeted by Jake say he is absolutely handsome and gentle-spirited. He is still a puppy and we are working hard to curb some of his jumping and playfulness, but it is a great work in progress. You wouldn’t happen to know Cesar Millan personally, would you? I could use his help, as this big guy requires nearly all of my strength to manage. LOL! God Bless you, Mark, and keep up the good fight!

Nana and Trinity

My daugter Tori and I had sister German Shepherds Nana and Trinity from birth. Tori and I attended a Nascar Race in April as volunteers for Raceway Ministries. While we were gone Nana was dead at age 10 months from either a snake bite or poison (we have 12 acres). I held the info from Tori till we got home. Her mother had to bury Nana while we were gone and walking Tori to the grave site was the hardest thing we ever had to do. Trinity is doing fine but misses her sister and we find her laying by the cross some days. Thanks for your book. Tori will not read ir yet but will in tiime.

Kirby

This is Kirby, and he is always getting into the middle of whatever you are doing…in hopes that he can learn how to do it himself.
In this picture he was hired as a helper to carry the required tools around, on his tool belt, while we laid new tile in the bathroom.
This made him the happiest dog in the world!
