Listener Stories

Desh

I don’t have a story, I am writing because I just read Rescuing Sprite and although heartbreaking, it was beautiful. I have always had dogs in my life, if not my own, I am taking care of some one else’s. Until recently I lived with my sister and her boyfriend and helped take care of their beautiful Golden “Desh”. I am a very proud aunt. He is one of the sweetest, kindest and most friendly dogs you will ever meet. He loves to meet new people, not understanding not everyone stops to say hi to him when he is so obviously waiting for tehir attention. He loves other dogs and even his Feline brother Joe. He just wants to love and be loved. Don’t we all. I do not have my own dog right now, mostly I am afraid of the eventual loss.
Mr. Levin I know nothing about your work, I am Canadian, so American politics are certainky not my forte. But I am so glad you wrote Rescuing Sprite and shared those difficult emotions, it is great to know there are so many other people like us dog lovers.

Spike, Tutt

Hello Mark,

I have just finished reading your book \’Rescuing Sprite\’ and feel compelled to write to you.  (I have never done this before).

I think right at the start I was taken by the beauty of your Sprite on the cover of the book, what a smile!  Then as I read on I was drawn in by many similarities.  Your wife\’s name Kendall is one of my best friends name (Kendyll).  And Sprites\’ name is so similar to my Spike.  He was the most loving boxer boy.  I feel myself fighting a lump in my throat just writing his name.  He was only 8 when we had to put him down and had suffered for 4 years with the strangest problem… he was unable to pee when it got cold outside (and living in Calgary, Alberta Canada it is cold a lot of the time).  I took him to 5 different vets and they just could not figure it out so for 4 long, cold winters he would struggle and freeze his paws trying to relieve himself.  The last winter I actually would hold a bucket under him at the back landing to help him.  He was embarrassed and humble about this, my friends all thought I was crazy to do this but you do what you have to do when you love them so much.
When the day came that my 4 children and I made the decision that he had suffered enough we had our favorite vet come to our home and put him down.  Four days later my Mom passed away and I ached for the hugs, kisses and quiet support Spike would have given me.  I felt that no one could understand that I was grieving as much for my dog as I was for my Mom, in fact more for Spike as my Mom had Alzhelmers and I felt I had lost her a few years before.   (more…)

Beanie

Six months after losing Beanie, my toy black and tan dachshund of 16 years, my boyfriend bought me the cutest baby dachshund. I name all my dogs after fruits & vegetables so the closest we could agree on was Peanut. She’s now a year old and 6 lbs of energy, determination and love. Kinda takes away some of the stress of today’s events and gives hope that our nation can get back to the basics.

Sweetie

Just to say goodbye to Sweetie, the sweetest, most loving cat I have ever seen. Only had him for a week, got him from a shelter and he died today of pneumonia. At least he had a week of love and not living in a cage.

Shadow, Flip

Our bruiser of a cat Shadow passed away at almost 10 years of age due to leukemia and was a central figure in our boys lives from the time of their birth and was therapy for my wife and I during very trying times due to a miscarriage. Our oldest son was 7 and our youngest was only 2 1/2 when Shadow passed and his prescence was noticiably missed. I could not bring myself to look for another cat (Shadow was a Russian Blue, 20 pounds of pure muscle and big enough to guard a junk yard), so we decided to find a dog. After looking we decided on purchasing an Australian Shephard and found someone who had some 3 week old puppies for sale. Turns out, the lady selling the puppies was someone I went to High School with, even though she lived in another state. Well, we looked at the puppies and our oldest immediately fell in love with the pudgiest fuzzball I had ever seen who was mothering all of the other puppies (this I would later find out was her herding skills). Well we left without choosing a puppy but our oldest son, who never cried about anything, got teary eye so we knew right away that she was the one for us. After we returned and paid for our bundle of joy, our oldest son held her in the box on his lap and we tried to think of a name for her. After about 45 minutes, no one could agree on a name. All of a sudden someone pulled out in front of us and I had to make a quick stop, and the puppy and the box flipped out of my son’s lap and onto the floor of the car. We all gasped and our son commented that she ‘flipped’ off of his lap. As soon as he said ‘flip’, she looked up and let out the cutest bark, so since that day she has been Flip. Flip loves the water and we can’t keep her out of any lakes or reivers we visit when fishing and she is constantly swimming to the point of exhaustion, chasing fish, pulling boulders out of the river and ‘demanding’ we throw them for her to retrieve and finding any way to stay wet. However, come bath time, forget it, she wants nothing to do with getting clean or being in the water! Our oldest girl is 10 now, has some mild dysplasia in her hips so her days of swimming for hours is now down to swimming at max for 30 minutes only with a life vest attached. She is still our velcro Aussie and I think the prettiest one I have ever seen. Loyal, Protective, Honest and Loving. Attached is a picture of her exhausted and just before she fell asleep after swimming. Isn’t she beautiful!

Baxter, Maxx

Hi Mark, this past farther’s day my wife gave me the best gift ever, she got be the book on Sprite, I must say it tore me up seeing I had to put my 9 yr old golden down just a yr ago lthis time last yr, I also have a new 9 week old golden puppy.
there was soooo much I could relate to in your book.
I just want to say that i was so close to Baxter my golden that I even wrote a letter to him, I do have his ashes and yes we had the Vet do a creamation only of him, there is no doubt the dogs are mans best friends, they provide nothing but love to you and hardly ask anything in return only to be loved and fed. to this day I still call Maxx my new puppy by mistake baxter so don’t my wife and two kids who are now 19 and 23 as well as me being very proud of having a grad daughter.

I listen to your show every night, I take my Maxx with me seeing i have you on X M Radio, we take a ride to the lake and I am 100% on your side, you tell it exactly like it is. enough of politics for now, I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, you were right I kept the hankies next to me while I read your book in less than 3 hours, keep up your great work we need you.
sincerely,

Scott from MA
