Hi Mark, I just finished your book and it was very touching. I have 3 dogs of my own now (beagles!…they are so sweet) and am currently fostering another dog. They are so wonderful and each fulfills my life in different ways.
The only dog I\’ve had to put to sleep in my adulthood was my first beagle, Skyler. I\’d had her since she was only 8 weeks old and she lived to almost 15 years. As she got up in years, I tried to prepare myself for the inevitable, but in my mind, I always hoped she would pass quietly in her sleep. I just couldn\’t imagine putting her down when she could still wag her tail at me. Well, it was as if Skyler knew what I needed.
I had decided to take a short 2 day trip to see my brother in Kansas City. Skyler and Max (my adopted beagle who I still have) had automatic feeders, a doggie door and a great neighbor who would check on them. They gave me happy tail wags and kisses when I left. Upon my return, Skyler did not greet me at the door. I found her laying in the living room…her eyes open, she was breathing, but completely nonresponsive. I rushed her to the vet where they took x-rays and found a large mass in her abdomen. My vet told me we could operate and see what we\’re dealing with, but with her age and the suspicion it was more than likely a tumor, we probably wouldn\’t be giving her much quality of life. Skyler could not wag her tail at me…she didn’t even know I was there…it made my decision easier. Read the rest of this entry »

I was so moved by your book about Sprite. Unfortunately, I have my own sad story this. My dog, Tripod, became ill with gdv (bloat and stomach torsion) a week ago tonight. I figured out what it was when his stomach began swelling up. I got him to the emergency vet’s office as quickly as possible. Initially they told me the surgery would be about $3000.00 but the estimate came in at $4200 – 4900.00. I was devastated to make the decision to put him to sleep because of the expense of the surgery.
You see I have a rottweiler who has Addison’s disease and my vet bills are quite high. I can’t forgive myself for putting him down. He was born with a severely deformed foot and had three surgeries between 3 and 6 months of age. He was my beloved buddy. I wish like hell that I had had the surgery for him. I miss him so.

Mark, We regrettably have to put down our 17 year old Shepard, Oci. He was a border patrol working dog for nine years before being retired. He identified millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs and numerous illegal alien apprehensions. Now his sight is very poor, his hind quarters have almost quit working, and he is just very, very tired.
He has been a very loyal companion to our family. On Tuesday, we must take Oci to our vet and do what all pet owners dread. We must put him to sleep. I am an avid listener to you daily. Please pray for Oci and God Bless you!

For those who share in the loss of a great loyal friend, I offer this, “I think God will have prepared everything for our perfect happiness. If it takes my dog being there [in Heaven], I believe he’ll be there.” ( Rev. Billy Graham).
I know my Storm is waiting in a better place for the members of my family, and I hope the thought of this will give comfort to all seeking solace here. God bless

Mark:
I like you lost my TRUE Friend, his name was Sir Maximillion of Crossfield or “Max” he was the most beautifull Dark Chocolate Lab God ever made at least in my eyes. He went to heaven 3 years ago and I still because of his loss. I know I will see him again but it still is hard being without him now. So my friend I know what you are missing out of your life and you see him again also just like I will see my Max.
You are the Great One Mark and I Love you for that and so does Sprite.
Thank Yoiu for letting me share
