Listener Stories

Rescuing Dogs

My husband and I listen to your show every afternoon on the way home from and we have your book.  I\’ve heard you mention your dogs before and I\’m glad that you take the time to do so.  We are involved in rescue work and usually have a dog at home that we\’ve pulled from the kill shelter and are holding it while we\’re waiting for a transport to a permenent foster home.  It would be great if you would mention to your listeneners the probability that a dog purchased from a pet store is from a puppy mill.  Most every breed has a rescue group that pulls dogs from kill shelters and takes owner turn ins. Let them know that if they are interested in a dog, they can find one by searching the internet for that breed rescue or going to www.petfinder.com.

Thanks.

Zoey

I would like to tell you about Zoey, our Golden Retreiver. We got her when she was 5 weeks old and she was with us almost 11 years.
She was a special dog to us and the neighborhood. She loved everybody and everybody loved her. She took walks with my wife almost every evening. Seeing her friends alnog the way. She seemed almost human. We did’nt train her to commands. Instead we talked to her like a person. She understood everything. We had to put her to sleep three days ago. It was the hardest thing we’ve ever done in our lives. She had cancer and her organs were shutting down. We could’nt stand to see her suffer. She went quietly and peacefully while we held her in our arms. I hope the afterlife is what I believe it is so we can finally be with her again.

No Regrets

I volunteer at a no kill shelter and usually the smaller vintage dogs get adopted quickly so I don’t feel guilty by not taking them home. Last week, an adopter changed his mind and I got a nice 14 yr old Jack Russel/sheltie mix. He gets along with my two vintage doxies and all the 27 cats. He has arthritis, but loves to chase a tennis ball. Most of the brown hair on his face has turned white and the black is still there, but when I first saw him, I thought of Sprite. I told the staff that if he doesn’t get picked up that day because of second thoughts, he would be mine. I don’t regret taking him.

Marco

My husband and I rescued Marco after he was found abandoned near the court house in our little town. He has a mangled tail and is still not able to let anyone hold him. But he is happy and healthy in our home and will stay with us for his lifetime.

Ollie

I have a special friend named Ollie
He’s a little wiener dog; by golly
But a wiener dog with one small quirk
You see, little Ollie’s back legs don’t work
But to Ollie that just does not matter
Because his front legs still go pitter patter
He pulls himself along quite well
And now and then he sits a spell
I find him waiting by the door
He knows he has a walk in store
Bounding from under his favorite blankie
He seems to smile as if to thank me
But there is no need for the pleasure is mine
A treasured friend of the very best kind
He is ever so ready for a quick transformation
To which he looks forward with great expectation
In a moment he will not be the regular Ollie
But rather the amazing “Ollie The Trolley”
He is already striving while I’m hooking him up
He is Ollie The Trolley the fierce wonder pup
Then it’s out the door in the blink of an eye
Now it is Ollie’s turn to fly
He trollies out along the drive
The fastest wiener dog alive
Or so I am sure my dear Ollie feels
At least he’s the fastest wiener on wheels (more…)
