Just finished your book about Sprite. It reminded me of each of the last two dogs I have lost.
My first dog had all the symptoms that Sprite exhibited. I also had two children who were raised with this dog. I carried her to the vet on her final day. It was a tough call, but she was at the end of her life. I cried for days. I received the nicest letter from our state vet school. They received her body. She was part of a successful drug test that gave her several exta quality years.
Our next dog was 16 when she collapsed. On a Sunday morning I found her paralyzed from the waist back, and covered in her own excrement. I live on the NC Outer Banks and we do not have regular vet service. It was going to be 36 hours before a vet came to our island. I had to put her down myself. There was no other choice. I\’ll never forget the the memory of her sad eyes when I put my pistol to her forehead. I burried her next to a lone Confederate grave about a mile from our home. I visit her often.
Determining to end a dog\’s life is very difficult, but absolutely necessary. We have that obligation.

On Thursday, October 16, 2008, I lost my Angel Marie. Angel was an 11 year old yellow lab. She was the light of my life. She was a born protector. Twice she kept me from stepping on a rattlesnake. She kept the other dogs away from harm as well. She will be so missed.
On Friday, Oct. 17, a friend came by and gave me the book \”Rescuing Sprite\”. What a wonderful book. I finished the book last night through many tears. I found comfort in the fact that I am not alone in my sorrow over my Angel.
My son and I rescued Angel from a busy street. She was just a baby and she was running as fast as she could through traffic. I pulled off the road and ran out in the road and she bounded into my arms. It was almost as if she had been looking for me. Thank you for the beautiful story of Sprite.

Thanks Mark for \”Rescuing Sprite\”. I bought 10 copies last year for Christmas gifts! What a sensitive, wonderful book! I have spent 20+ years in animal welfare work, rescuing and re-homing, specializing in small dogs. Currently, we still have 3 rescue dogs that were neglected and abused… we are the blessed ones to have them in our lives! Abuse is occurs far too often. There are so many innocent children and animals who suffer.
You are a treasure. Thanks for your great mind, heart and committment to this great country, your family, and your canine family members.

Spike is our mascot at Spike\’s Junkyard Dogs, USA. He is a patriot that has his own uniform when he visits the sailors at the New London Submarine Base in Groton, Ct.
They love him and his hot dogs that are sold in his shop there. As our official spokesdog, he travels to all of our units from his home base in our corporate offices. He brings instant joy and happiness to all that meet him.
